Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Brentham IV on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 101 runs

Match report The 4s approached this one with a reasonable degree of confidence having comfortably beat Brentham at their place earlier in the season. However this was a very different team to the one we faced that day with only 2 players from that side. We arrived at Boddingtons to find a pitch looking a bit green at the bottom end and dusty at the top end. Looks like some watering had been done on another part of the square and drained off to the bottom half of the pitch we were using. Mickey Mouse groundsmanship it’s has to be said. With the searing heat though it was still a bat first day. Unfortunately stand in skipper Lord Whear was under instructions from Slowheet to bowl first. The oppo were keen to bat first so they needn’t bothered to toss really!

It was clear from the off that batting at the bottom end was going to be challenging as balls shot through at ankle height on a regular basis. At the top end balls tended to pop off a length. Omar and Kush opened the bowling and the former struck early when one of his straight balls sneaked under the openers bat. Thereafter we did take wickets pretty regularly but in fairness to Brentham they capitalised on any loose ones and found the boundary more often than we would have liked. Their top scorer made 44 but steady contributions throughout meant they ended up getting bowled out for 194 in the 46th over. The wickets were spread out but Andrew G deserves a mention for his 11 over spell that should have been better rewarded than the 3-23 figures he finished with.

As for our reply I will keep it brief! The tone was set in the 2nd over when Ali was bowled by a half tracker that hardly bounced. Flat Pack Billy and Jonesy dug in for a while and got the score up to 51 but once Billy got out the innings just fell away. Jonesy top scored with 36 but with 5 ducks we were never going to get close. Brentham bowled very well and took full advantage of this poor excuse of a wicket. A defeat then by 101 runs but they were too good for us on the day.

Man of the match goes to Jonesy for his gutsy knock and brave display of keeping that kept the extras down. Schlong de la Jour is an obvious one this week. The absent skipper for his instruction to bowl first. It may not have changed the result but this was not the day to apply the Law of Smithy!
